Merrickville, Ontario - Can you imagine an SUV weighing over two tons that can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 8 seconds while burning about 9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers? No, I'm not talking about gas-electric spinoffs like the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid or Chrysler Aspen Hybrid. This vehicle uses a different powertrain altogether: a modern twin-turbo diesel. It sports the blue-and-white roundel of BMW and is called X5!

Two new Z4 models coming this spring

After ending Z4 roadster production this past summer, BMW has announced the availability of two all-new Z4 models this springtime. Available for power will be a pair of 3.0 liter straight-six engines. The first generates 255 horses and 220 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,600 rpm and is naturally aspirated.

The automotive world is shrinking by the second. After Volkswagen, BMW is now selling diesel-powered cars in North America. A 3-Series sedan called 335d and a new variant of the X5 known as the xDrive35d are now part of the brand's portfolio. Wolfsburg's TDI monopoly will soon be no more. A new market segment is fast emerging and the 2009 BMW 335d, the first premium compact sedan to run on diesel in Canada, represents the tip of this iceberg.

It's obvious that BMW wants to demonstrate its mastery of green technology and is taking full advantage of the Los Angeles Auto Show to do so. Not only has the German manufacturer officially released pricing on its diesel vehicles destined for North America (the Canadian prices will be revealed in a few days), but it has also taken the opportunity to lift the veil on several new technologies, some of which, like the Mini E, are already almost reality.

BMW will become the first premium automaker to deploy a fleet of some 500 all electric vehicles for private use in day to day driving. The automaker's "MINI E" is an electric powered MINI, which employs a 150 kilowatt, or 204 horsepower electric motor which drives the front wheels.

Our spies have lifted the lid on the next-generation BMW Z4 and the big news is that instead of a fabric top, the new version of this roadster follows the footsteps of its 3-Series Convertible sibling and its Mercedes-Benz SLK rival with a retractable steel top. As the pictures of this mildly disguised Z4 prototype suggest, the styling seems more muscular. Rumor has it, the new Z4 will likely offer a twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight six-cylinder powerplant! And we hear there's even the possibility that the Z4 will be available with diesel power for the first time!

After the X5, X3 and X6 models, the X1 is the natural evolution of the compact SUV lineup. Despite the cancellation of the super SAV project, the X7, the manufacturer intends to pursue its plans and level down its SUV lineup.
